In Memoriam: Dame Elizabeth Hanan

Cheree Henderson —

It is with heartfelt respect that we mark the passing of Dame Elizabeth Hanan, a dedicated leader and beloved former student of Otago Girls’ High School. Elizabeth attended Otago Girls’ from 1952 to 1954, alongside her sisters, Jennifer and Patricia. Renowned as a trailblazer in her community, she went on to serve two terms as Deputy Mayor of Dunedin and was a driving force in establishing the New Zealand International Science Festival.

Dame Elizabeth’s career began in teaching, but her impact extended far beyond the classroom. Known affectionately as “the bulldozer,” she was celebrated for her tenacity, her ability to see the best in people, and her steadfast commitment to Dunedin. In 1998, she was named Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to the community. Her legacy endures through her many contributions to Dunedin’s civic and cultural life, from the Otago Museum Trust to the Fortune Theatre and Keep Dunedin Beautiful.

Dame Elizabeth passed away peacefully on 13 October as the sun rose, leaving behind an enduring legacy of service and passion. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were touched by her dedication to her city and country.
