Camp Routeburn

Ms F Speight, TIC Routeburn camp —

There are no bad days on the Routeburn and Routeburn Camp had five fabulous days of wonderful weather, wonderful students and wonderful staff.  After leaving on Sunday we ventured north to stay at Paradise where we enjoyed fishing and even saw several falcons swooping low with some students and teachers having a very close encounter!  The next day we ventured up to Routeburn Falls Hut where we stayed for two nights.  It was a real treat to stay in the hut and on our rest day from walking with a pack we had a relatively easy walk up to the Harris Saddle and enjoyed fabulous views of the snowy mountains of Fiordland.  On our return in the afternoon we ventured down to the Harris Lake and some of us even went for a very invigorating swim in the alpine lake!  Later, the Routeburn Falls behind the hut were explored by some and many students commented on how delicious the water tasted having come straight off the surrounding mountains.  Our last day saw us walking back down the track which looked completely different as we were walking in the opposite direction.  We camped in Arrowtown and enjoyed the small luxuries of a hot shower and then some time exploring in the town.  On our last day we journeyed back after an excursion to the old Chinese miner's camp and we even stopped to watch the bungy jumping though we couldn't convince anyone to have a go.  We arrived back to Dunedin on the Thursday happy to have had a wonderful week of learning in the outdoors.
