NCEA parallel external examinations

Mrs K Dick, Deputy Principal —

As we head into the holidays, it's an important time to reflect on our successes and our upcoming challenges. Please make sure that your young person has logged into their NZQA portal using their personal National Student Number which will be coming out to students at Whānau Time. It is particularly crucial for those students sitting exams digitally. If they have not logged on, they will not be able to access the examination portal. It also allows you to see how their internal assessment has been going.

Although it might seem ages away, when we return in Term Three many subject areas will be working towards the NCEA parallel external examinations. They are extremely important particularly given that Covid is still with us. If your young person contracts Covid in the November examinations and is unable to attend, their work in our September parallels will be used for derived grades. Our NCEA parallel external examinations run from the 15th to the 21st of September . This is so that students’ revision and practice occurs close to the actual final external examinations, and so that the full range of standards may be tested in these examinations. We have also identified a need to make the parallel examination conditions replicate the actual examination conditions as closely as possible. Because formal examinations are different to the way students learn in everyday classes, they need to understand the conditions under which the exams occur. They need to reflect fully on the importance of working independently to prepare and study for the exams.
Please talk to your young person about a study plan for the weeks ahead.
If you have any questions about things like internal assessment or derived grades, please see the Student Assessment Booklet.
