All Blues & Minor Blues Shine at Southern Jam 2024

Mr E Shields, HOD Visual and Performing Arts —

We are thrilled to share that our combined Jazz Band from Otago Girls' High School and Otago Boys’ High School has returned from the 2024 Southern Jam Youth Jazz Competition in Blenheim, enriched with invaluable performance experience and well-deserved accolades.
Our Big Band, All Blues, earned a Silver Award for their stellar performance, while Minor Blues was honoured with a Bronze Award for their outstanding Combo set.
A special shout-out goes to Finn Marshall (Alto Sax) and Callan Power (Tenor Sax) from Otago Boys', who were selected to perform in the All Stars Bands, a remarkable achievement that underscores their exceptional talent and dedication. Maya Satake also deserves recognition for her vocal contribution to the All Stars Bands' rendition of "Doxy."
The success of any ensemble is a collective effort, so a heartfelt thank you to Fleur de Clifford (Bass), Anna Feillet (Drums Combo), Anson Fung (Trombone), Chihiro Homma (Tenor Sax), Emily Lokman (Trumpet), Nikita Lu (Trombone Big Band / Piano Combo), Katherine McArthur (Baritone Sax), Sarah Pushenko (Piano), Theresa Radka (Trombone), Maya Satake (Vocals, Guitar), Rata Williams (Drums Big Band), Phoenix Haddow (Alto Sax), Finn Marshall (Alto Sax), Callan Power (Tenor Sax), Callum Thompson (Trumpet), and Oban Voice (Trumpet).
This achievement is a testament to the hard work and musical talent of our students, alongside the invaluable guidance of our director, Dr. Bill Martin. We are immensely proud of everyone who participated and represented our schools with such distinction.
Thank you to all who supported us on this recent trip. We look forward to continuing to share our love of jazz with the school and wider community.
