Year 9 2024

Ms M Young, Year 9 Dean —

On Wednesday, we welcomed the Year 9 students to Otago Girls'. Excited students filled the school gates with joyous chatter and laughter, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Their enthusiasm persisted as they connected with fellow students in their Whānau class, fostering a wonderful sense of community, where everyone belongs. This week initiated the beginning of new friendships, opportunities and learning experiences. Students have impressed with their positivity, respect, and full commitment to new challenges and learning.

Year 13 Peer Supports fostering meaningful connections with Year 9 students has been a delightful and enriching experience this week. The Peer Support programme will run during i-Time for the first 8 weeks of this term. Year 9 students will meet their Year 13 'Sister' next week, fostering another supportive environment. This mentorship aims to guide and assist new students through their OGHS journey. Each Year 9 student will get a Year 13 sister from their House, and will have opportunities during i-Time, on Sports Day and at Year 9 camp to build connections with each other.

Next week, Year 9 students will get the chance to sign up for sports teams. Exploring music lessons, cultural activities or the performing arts, these are vibrant learning experiences we encourage new students to join. It is important that all students are participating in one summer, and one winter activity each year. The more opportunities you take, the more people you meet, and the more you feel you belong.
