13 Science

Mrs C Beaman, Science Teacher —

13 Science chose a stunning day to investigate the dating of the Dunedin Volcanic Complex. Starting at the Geology Department of the Otago University, we worked with Professor Scott learning about radiometric dating and even identified 20 million year old foraminifera fossils in limestone. We collected photographic evidence of the volcano and then travelled around our unique Otago Peninsula. From Sandymount we could see Hoopers Inlet and Allan's Beach, where the volcanic rock has been dated to be 16 million years old. Awesome day out. Thanks to our assistants too: Dr Phil and Mrs Fleury!
