What is idiopathic adolescent scoliosis?

Back in Motion Physiotherapy —

Scoliosis is a musculoskeletal condition where the spine curves side to side, giving an ā€˜Sā€™ shaped curve when viewing the spine posteriorly.

Idiopathic adolescent scoliosis (IAS) usually develops between the ages of 11 and 14 and is more common in females. A family history of scoliosis increases your likelihood of developing the condition.

Symptoms that are suggestive of IAS include, uneven hips or shoulders, bending to one side, one shoulder blade being more prominent and back pain without injury. A physiotherapist can assess your body and identify any abnormalities or asymmetries. If IAS is suspected, an x-ray can be done to confirm the severity.

Physiotherapy can help alleviate pain by releasing tight muscles, using supportive postural taping and addressing muscular imbalances through an individualised stretching and strengthening program. Started treatment early will help prevent progression of IAS and stop imbalances from worsening.
