Ms C. Hokianga, Sports Co-ordinator —

On Saturday 16 June, Otago Girls’ High School entered a team in the annual Otago/Southland Secondary Interschool Teams Chess Championship at John McGlashan College.

Cailyn McConnell, Claudia Scott, Venice Llanos and Katelyn Phillips represented the school admirably with several wins and draws. We were narrowly defeated by Southland Girls’ for the best all-girl team prize 2 ½ - 1 ½ The competition lasted five hours and each person played seven games. Thank you to Abigail Thompson for cheering the team on all afternoon, Mrs Greta Johnson from Otago Chess Club for her excellent coaching during Clubs, and students from Otago Boys’ who have also been helping out at Chess Club on Wednesday lunchtimes in K1. Good luck to OBHS A and James Hargest A who both go on to the national finals in Mt Maunganui on 29-30 September.
