Sports Awards

Sophie Miller and Dana Ballantyne, Sports Prefects —

On Tuesday 20 October the annual Otago Girls' Sports Awards evening was held. It was a celebration of the successes of many students, and it was great to have so many supporters and family there as well. There were so many girls with outstanding achievements to recognise this year, especially considering the effects that Covid-19 had on sport.

We were also very lucky to have an ex-girl and New Zealand curler, Mhairi-Bronté Duncan as our guest speaker. Mhairi came and shared her journey in curling. Mhairi has represented New Zealand a number of times and has the opportunity to qualify for the Olympics in the mixed doubles event later this year. Mhairi was a great speaker and shared that one of the most important things in sport is a good attitude.  It was great for students to hear the story from the perspective of an ex-girl and made it very relatable for students looking to compete at an international level in their chosen sport. See the attached document for a copy of her speech.

As a whole, the event ran very smoothly. It was a great evening filled with celebrations of our wonderfully talented students. It was also the perfect time to thank all of the teachers, parents, coaches and supporters for their commitment to sport and to Otago Girls’ High School for another year. It was a very proud evening, and one which reminded all of how lucky we are to be able to celebrate our successes this year.
