Year 10 Social Studies - Shark Tank

Ms F Speight, Acting HOD Social Sciences —

This week in Year 10 Social Studies, groups of students have been giving their presentations for their final World of Work assessment. Students have been involved in creating a business idea and have then pitched their idea to their classmates. On Wednesday during i-time, the top 10 presentations were held in the hall. In front of all the Year 10s and a panel of "Sharks" (aka judges) made up of Mrs Porter, Mrs Seward and one of our student teachers Mr Jackson, the groups gave their pitches. There were a variety of innovative business ideas and products that were pitched and the Year 10s revealed a flair for creativity and business acumen. As well as making a profit, many businesses also had a focus on sustainability and many included donating a portion of their profit to charity or other initiatives. Ideas ranged from businesses such as "Frosto" - a Lord of the Rings inspired ice cream shop where you could purchase flavours such as Rivendell Ripple and Samwise Gumdrop to "Snapshades" which are sunglasses that can also take photos. The Bed Bed won the sustainable materials award and is a bed that can be used from childhood through to adulthood saving the need to buy a bigger bed whilst businesses such as the Enviro-Village and F.C.E. had a business focus on helping improve the lives of others. Ultimately though there could be only one winner and congratulations must go to the team of Maggie McDonald and Sammy McCormack from 10Wd that took out the top prize. Their idea of the "Wet 'N Drive" was a microfibre towel seat cover. They had created a prototype and gave a very engaging pitch. Congratulations!
