13 Biology trip to Otago University School of Physical Education

Miss W Dunn, Biology —

We were fortunate to have many students get involved in practical activities down at the University campus after an initial postponement due to Covid Level 2. Four groups rotated through four different sites with students running on a treadmill with their gas exchange measured via a mask, cycling in and out of a heat chamber (set to 36 degrees Celsius) and immersion in water at a range of temperatures. Other students were monitoring and recording results.

The point was to see how well the body can maintain key elements (temperature and gases) in a range of different physical environments while exercising. This is called Homeostasis and forms a good introduction to the upcoming internal assessment.

A massive thanks to the staff at the University who host us every year and our own willing participants who showed enthusiasm and are always a pleasure to take out to such experiences.
