Lagoon Study

Bug Day

Dr I. Phillips, HOD Science —

On Tuesday 12 September eight Year 9 students including the Tomahawk Lagoon team were involved in a detailed bug study of our site at Tomahawk Lagoon.

Water and mud samples were collected and transported to Tahuna Intermediate where the team isolated a range of organisms, determined the number and attempted to classify the range of organisms present. Expert guidance was provided by Mark and Lena Schallenberg, Andrew Innes and Jonathon Kim. The work enabled the ECO-Otago Science group to build up a picture of the Benthic organisms in the lagoon which are a food source for fish. The number and type of organisms also gave information on the health of the lagoon as an environment for larger animals. Thanks to the eight students involved: Jenna Knarston, Rachel Gerson, Mridula Mannan, Hayley Warren, Georgia Warren, Isabelle Dalley, Lily Malley and Sarah Thompson.
