Probability

Ms A Lorange, Mathematics —

Year 9 students are currently working on probability and as part of the topic, they are learning about the difference between theoretical and experimental probabilities. Today we played the 'free the animals' game, where students strategically place their six animals in cages marked 0 to 5. They roll 2 dice and if the difference between the 2 scores matches the number of a cage in which one of their animals is found, they can free one animal. The first person to free all their animals win. As students play, they keep a tally of which differences from 0 to 5 come out when they roll the dice. We then compared the experimental results to the theoretical probability for each score.
