Physical Education and Health

Mrs M Paterson, HOD Physical Education —

It has been an action packed Term 2 in Health and Physical Education. Here is a snapshot of what students have been learning:

Year 9 and 10 classes have been put through their paces in the Fitness and Sports Science units. Building a platform of knowledge about anatomy and biomechanics to better understand how the body functions for physical performance and what physiological changes occur through different methods of training. Through exposing students to a diverse range of training methods including circuits, resistance exercises, speed and agility intervals we hope to inspire students to pursue life-long wellbeing by understanding that physical fitness can be achieved in many contexts and positively impacts all dimensions of hauora.

Year 11 to13 students have spent their term applying knowledge of Biomechanics, Sport Psychology and Skill Learning principles to critique and improve their performance in different practical contexts including Badminton, Running and Volleyball.

Year 11 Outdoor Education students have recently completed their mountain bike unit with a two-day trip to navigating the tracks and trails in Naseby. Students demonstrated a fantastic improvement in their technical biking skills on a variety of terrain, with twists and turns and some challenging climbs along the picturesque Hoffman's Dam.

Adventure Based Learning (ABL), Low Ropes and High Ropes has been the learning environment for Year 12 and 13 students to understand social development of self and others. Students are looking forward to the challenges they will face as they navigate and support each other on the High Ropes at Adventure Southland in Invercargill this week.
