Hip Hop International Dance Championship

Alyssa Slade, Year 13 —

I travelled to Phoenix, Arizona to compete in the Hip Hop International Dance Championship with my crew Ambush. Two days after I arrived, my crew and I got straight into dance training and sometimes training on days where the weather would reach up to 42 degrees Celsius. My crew and I had competed in both the preliminary round and semifinals round, but sadly just missed out on the final round. Overall we were able to come away with 9th place out of 44 crews in the Adult Division. Being able to represent NZ doing the thing I love most, in another country, was an amazing experience. Not to mention being able to meet other dancers from all over the world and strengthen the bonds I have with my teammates. Because of Covid, and this being the first time I had left the country in years, I made the most of it by sightseeing, shopping and trying as many different famous fast food chains that I had seen all over the internet (after the competition finished of course). I was very pleased with the result I was able to come away with, and the trip was an unforgettable experience.
