Camp Otepoti

Jasmine Merriman, Year 10 —

During the weeklong Otepoti camp, we got to experience many different adventures that let us challenge ourselves. Some of the things we got to do included going abseiling and going on a confidence course at the Waiora Scout camp. We also got to experience life by the sea and try new challenges in the water including sailing, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking and trying to build a raft that would keep us afloat in the water. Everyone enjoyed the various challenges but for most, the highlight of the water day was decorating gingerbread men supplied by Mosgiel New World’s bakery department. We walked up Hereweka (Harbour Cone) in gale force winds and were rewarded with amazing views of the Peninsula and beyond. We tramped Leith Saddle and after five hours of walking, we were tired but happy that we accomplished our challenge. Even though we didn’t travel as far we still got to experience a good portion of life in the bush. Ranging from excruciating walks in the pelting rain to Sailing across the harbour in the sweltering heat. The gruelling challenges tested our limits and we came back more confident and happy than when we started our week.
