WOW Trip

Paige Milburn, Year 12 —

In the second week of the term three holidays, Year 12 Media Studies and Textiles travelled up to Wellington to experience the many exciting activities that the capital has to offer. After getting up unusually early for our Wednesday morning flight, and landing in Wellington we briefly visited the Old St Paul’s Church and the National Library of New Zealand, where the original documents of the Treaty of Waitangi and the suffrage petition are kept. We then got to visit Te Papa, where the World War I exhibition was situated - an incredibly chilling exhibition. In the afternoon we had the privilege of visiting the Weta Workshops, who have created amazing props and set pieces for famous films such as the Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings, and were given leather and chainmail making workshops. After the fun at Weta Workshops, we walked to the beautiful Roxy Theatre where we were given a tour of the amazing art deco-designed building.

On Thursday we were shown around the Textiles and Design departments at Massey University where we witnessed some incredible Textiles and Design work and students working hard on their projects. We also got to see some of the behind the scenes with the costume creation work at Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School, which was a really cool experience. In the afternoon we stepped inside the house which was the birthplace of New Zealand Author Katherine Mansfield, where we learned about her books and upbringing. Once night time came around, we were filled with excitement, as we headed to the World Of Wearable Arts show, which many know as WOW. I was certainly ‘wowed’ by the New Zealand and International talent that was on display, and the show entirely.

Our third and final day in Wellington consisted of making a hilarious News/Television skit at Capital E TV, riding up the hill on the Wellington cable cars and taking a tour of Parliament. We then had a gorgeous plane ride home that came with stunning views.

I thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Wellington, and I know many other students will agree when I say that overall it was such a fun, exciting and educational trip (with great shopping!) We are very grateful to Mrs Flanagan, Ms Joyce and Ms Hayward for organising these awesome few days in the Capital.
