Mrs M. Leonor. ICT Systems Manager —

It’s the time of year again when we have to think if our girls have the appropriate computer for the next schoolyear. You can check your options through our recommended retailers.

If you are after a good deal on refurbished ex-lease devices give 3C Computers and Mobiles a go. Check out their current sale here. You can find out more in https://www.3cnz.co.nz/product-category/refurbished/ or their Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/Customer1stComputerCompany/reviews/?ref=page_internal

The school’s recommended devices are:

  1. Chromebook - This is suitable for entry level, but may require a replacement to a Windows notebook or a Macbook in senior school for use in design rich subjects.

  2. Macbook

  3. Windows notebook - Only a Windows 10 version is acceptable. For security reasons lower versions of Windows is strongly advised against.

The iPad or any tablet is not recommended.

The minimum specification requirements are:

  1. 4GB, but preferably 8GB, of memory for a Windows notebook or a Macbook; 2GB of memory for a Chromebook

  2. Avoid a Celeron processor, if purchasing a Windows notebook.

  3. At least 5 hours of battery life

  4. 10-inch screen size

  5. Anti-virus software for a Windows notebook and a Macbook - A free version can be opted for as long as it is setup to regularly install virus definition updates.

  6. Protective cover suitable for a backpack or a carry case, if carried separately

Both Google and Microsoft apps are hosted in the cloud and available for free to students and staff. Other than the anti-virus, no software is required for purchase. Students wanting to use any of the Adobe Creative Cloud applications can purchase an annual license through the school at a very reasonable price.

Parents are urged to look at getting an accident insurance with the new computer or contacting their contents insurer to make sure that their children’s personal devices are included in the cover. The school’s insurance policy does not cover students’ personal property.
