Caitlin Taylor - Green Island School

As a part of the Gateway program at school, I have spent several Fridays so far (before and after lockdown) at Green Island School getting first-hand experience of what it’s like to be a primary school teacher. My experience at Green Island has allowed me to form bonds with the younger students and get to know them, as well as the teachers, and get a feel for teaching in an actual classroom. I have been able to see the programs that the school has, such as the STEAM program, and it has allowed me to understand how important certain learning programs are for the students. Fridays are interesting days at the school as we have done things like the perpetual motor program (PMP), junior explorers, and lots of interesting artwork! The students have been studying insects and bugs for the past while, so it has been really cool to see the art they come up with based around that. My desired course at University next year is a Bachelor of Teaching, so I have found this an extremely helpful and enlightening experience. I would definitely encourage students to participate in this program as it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and it’s an amazing experience.
