World Cross Country Championships

Mr T Curtis, TIC Athletics —

A phenomenal result!

Catherine Lund (Year 13) represented NZ and had a fantastic race in the World U20 Cross Country race in Bathurst, Australia. There were over 74 runners in the race with large teams from the giants of cross country - Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda. They did not disappoint as the runners from the African countries filled the first 16 places. The course was brutal along with the temperature sitting at 36 degrees. Eight runners failed to finish the race due to exhaustion. Catherine came home strong in 27th place - a fantastic effort and ahead of the entire team of Australian runners and the first NZ runner to finish. The race was streamed live around the world with the commentator saying 'Here's the first kiwi home' as Catherine crossed the line. Congratulations Catherine - what a race!
