Why study the film Hidden Figures?

Jemma Bezuidenhout, Year 10 —

This film is not just educational, but it’s inspiring, and students can relate to it.

You are also able to read the story since it’s originally a book by Margot Lee Shetterly. Studying it will give you amazing facts and really get you into the empowering film and novel.

This is the story of a group of black  mathematician women who overcome sexism and racism while working for NASA. Set in 1960’s Virginia, it focuses on the lives of three main women, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson. These women show people that it doesn't matter what colour your skin is or what gender you are,  as long as you work hard and are determined, then you will receive the rewards. They fight for an equal status in NASA’s world of mathematics and a right to be what they choose. They overcome many challenges and show us just how important mathematics is for the world. They have imprinted history massively with not only their minds, but their voices and hearts as well and have shown that you can truly do anything you put your heart and mind to, even if the whole world is against you. They are amazing role models for anyone of any colour, any race, and any gender. They make you feel honoured that you are different to everyone else, that there is no one the exact same as you and that you have the chance to be whatever or whoever you chose.

This Film has taught me to follow my dreams and be determined, and not listen to the people who are trying to stop me from succeeding my goals. So I truly advise you to study or even just watch the film, you won’t regret it.
