Miss C. Johnston, Latin Teacher —

On Friday 12 August Dr Gwynaeth McIntyre (University of Otago) visited the Latin and Classics classes. Dr McIntyre shared her Latin expertise and specialist knowledge with the students in a presentation about the Aeneid – the Roman story of Troy.

Members of the Latin classes also participated in the Classical Association’s annual Quizzes and Latin Reading Competitions. We had great success. For the Latin Reading Competitions Lily Chilcott, Nele Bross, and Ella Rees were each awarded first place for the Year 12, 11, and 9 age divisions respectively. Overall the judges were impressed with the quality of the reading, as many of the students read selections from Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland, and Alice Through the Looking Glass and the judges thought that the modern Latin was a lot harder to read than ancient Latin.

The Year 11 quiz team (Renée Mullins, Milena Schwotzer, Anna Dawes, and Nele Bross) came fourth and earned a special mention for being the only Year 11 group participating against Year 13 teams. Two Latin teams were entered in the Junior Quiz in which we were awarded first and second place. Congratulations to Angeline Ireland-Davie, Gemma Wilson, Maddie Millhouse, and Lydia McMillan who came second and to Maia Dean, Madeleine Gray, Ella Rees, and Renee Harris who came first. Well done!
