Year 13 History Students Connect with Local History

Ms F Speight, HOD Social Sciences —

Last week, our Year 13 History students took their learning beyond the classroom, exploring the historical significance of Dunedin’s Bell Hill. In the 19th century, Bell Hill was a major obstacle that early settlers excavated to allow the city to expand — a huge engineering feat at the time.

As the closest school in New Zealand to the largest number of historic sites, Otago Girls’ students are uniquely placed to experience history firsthand. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of local heritage and see how the past continues to shape the city we live in today.
