Ski Trip

Aurora Spurr, 10Mcg —

I had the BEST time at the 2022 ski trip, easily one of the most action-packed, fun four days I’ve had this school year.

We departed from school in the early afternoon on Friday, the excitement slowly growing and growing. The bus rides were honestly one of the highlights for me, full of banter and laughter, as was the rest of the trip. Now, I am definitely not a morning person… so it was a bit of a shock to wake up at the crack of dawn to prepare for the day, but it was so worth it to watch the sunrise on the way up the mountain to the Remarkables. I was a first timer, so while my group was struggling to stay standing on the skis, the more advanced skiers and snowboarders ventured further up the mountain on the lifts.

Straight after our lesson, my other beginner friend and I got escorted to a blue (intermediate) run by two of our more advanced friends which was a struggle to say the least. By the time we had made it back down, I had convinced myself skiing was not for me. Bit dramatic, I know. The bus back to our accommodation in Kelvin Heights was the opposite to the previous rides: we were all a wreck. But still, we persisted and after our second day at the Remarkables, I felt like a pro. I had completed the same run I thought I had almost died on the day before!

The following day we skied at Coronet Peak where I surprised myself by not falling once on the blue runs which seemed like a thousand less times than the days prior. Later in the afternoon we were given free rein in Queenstown for an hour or so, and despite having to waddle through town since my legs hurt so bad, I had the best time. I devoured some delicious sushi… but got a bit carried away and then felt sick. Still worth it though!

The fourth and final day of skiing took place at Coronet Peak again on Tuesday, was a bit sad. None of us wanted to leave. The banter with the ski instructors, the loud music, the lift rides and making friends with random people; I fell in love with the environment, and it has fully convinced me to return next year. I’m counting down the days, only a whole year to wait! Thanks to the amazing Miss Young and the other teachers for organising everything, we are all so grateful for this wonderful experience. I would one thousand percent recommend this trip to everyone, no matter your ability! And how could I forget a ‘Whoop Whoop?!’
