Mathematics Department

Mrs J. Chapman, HOD Mathematics —

It has been a busy time for the Mathematics department this month, particularly on Tuesday 15 August when we had three different events happening!

We had four teams entered in the Senior O’MAthlon on Thursday 10 August at Logan Park High School. This competition is for senior girls from Year 11 to 13. Most of our teams were in Year 11 and it was a valuable learning experience for them.

During the day on Tuesday 15 the ICAS Mathematics competition for Year 9 to 13 was held, the juniors early in the day and the seniors slightly later. Around 40 girls took part and we look forward to getting their results back later this term.

On Tuesday 15 August, there were eight teams entered in the Junior O’MAthlon competition at the Edgar Centre. The girls were complimented on their positivity and enthusiasm. At one stage there were  three OGHS teams on the Top 10 leader board. Unfortunately their early success did not last, although one Year 9 team consisting of Jess Tyrrell, Isabella Henderson, Meg Sayers and Isabella Sanders came in 4th place, which was a fantastic effort, placing them as the top all-girls team.

On Tuesday 15 August we also held our annual Maths Quiz in the hall. This was a great success, with good participation from Year 9 to Year 13 who all enjoyed the many prizes. The team Algebros of Jenny Kim, Jemma Jeong, Erin Knox, Sara Taha and Jasmine Johnston took the top prize.

Towards the end of Term 2 we had five students compete in the inaugural Kiwi Maths Competition run by the University of Canterbury. The girls performed very well, with special mention going to Isabella Henderson and Jess Tyrrell who both received Excellence awards, scoring 88% and 83% respectively.
