Geology Fieldtrip

Mrs C Beaman, Science —

12 Science had a great day investigating the Geology of Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula last Monday, gathering evidence for their internal assessment on local rocks. We started at Rotary Park where we viewed Flagstaff, Swampy, Mt Cargill and Mihiwaka which are volcanoes from the 3rd Phase of the eruptions, 11 million years ago! We could also see Quarantine Island and Goat Island which is where the initial eruption was said to have begun 16 million years ago, releasing basalt magma as a shield volcano which reached 1000m! We then travelled to The Pyramids at Okia Reserve, near Victory Beach. These are dikes from inside the main Dunedin volcano which have been eroded to expose the columnar basalt. We next went to Brighton to observe the 200-150 million year old schist which has been uplifted by a massive earthquake 2000 years ago along the Akatore fault. Awesome students, awesome weather and a great day! Thanks to Mr Curtis and Ms Kingi for assisting us.
