Congratulations - Jana Elvy

Dr W. Martin, English —

Last Saturday it was announced at a closed prizegiving that Year 11 student Jana Elvy won first place in the Land of Granite Teen Writing Competition, run by Dunedin Public Libraries in partnership with Dunedin UNESCO City of Literature and the Dunedin Public Art Gallery. The competition was judged by art writer and poet Robyn Maree Pickens. The premise of the competition was to write a short story under 750 words inspired by art of Collin McCahon whose work is currently on display in the Dunedin Public Art Gallery. The pieces of McCahon’s that particularly inspired Jana’s Hills are: Otago Peninsula (1946-1949), North Otago landscape 2 (1967) and Saddle Hill from Taieri Mouth (1937-1938). You can listen to a brief interview with Jana (JA Thea) in the Write Spot with Dunedin UNESCO City of Literature series here: https://www.accessradio.org/ProgrammePage.aspx?pid=f0078e15-1513-45e0-911a-66d71baafac8
