Zooming Around! Tips for using Google Classroom and Zoom.

Mr C. Richards, Assistant Principal —

Kia ora koutou from my new office at home!

As you can see from the picture, Margaret, our beloved Cruickshank mascot, made it into my isolation bubble and is keeping an eye on my online teaching. Students should now be underway with their online learning in some format, which may include Zoom video conferences for some periods. Here are some tips about using Google classroom and Zoom video conferencing.

  • How do I access the Google classroom? Students should already have access to all their Google classrooms. Please email the teacher if unsure of the code.

  • How do I access Zoom? You can simply click on a link provided on the Google classroom. You will be prompted to download the Zoom app. If using a Chromebook, it will be added as an extension.

  • Do I need to sign up to Zoom? No, you do not need to have a Zoom account. However, if you want to practice using it to test the settings, then it is useful to have an account (zoom.us). Signing up with your school Google account is an easy way to do this.

  • How do I test my microphone and video? Click on the ‘up arrow’ next to Mute and select ‘Test Speaker & Microphone’. Using headphones with a built-in microphone provides the best sound. Also consider the lighting for a better picture.

  • What if my microphone or speakers are not working? Test the speakers on another app, like Spotify or YouTube. For other solutions, a Google search will be necessary. An alternative way is to download Zoom to your smartphone.

  • My laptop is broken! What do I do? Mr Richards has taken some extra laptops home and can arrange pickup/delivery. Please email him (rs@otagogirls.school.nz) if you require one.

  • Zoom tutorials can be found at zoom.us by clicking on SUPPORT .

For technical help please contact Mr Richards (rs@otagogirls.school.nz) or Mrs Leonor (leo@otagogirls.school.nz).

Happy Zooming everyone!
