Introduction to Gateway, Vocational Pathways & STAR programmes for Parents and Students

Mrs V. Wilson Career Education Leader —

Gateway Gateway is a school-based, government-funded programme for Year 13 students. The key objective is to provide opportunities for senior students to participate in work-based learning with an employer and to gain industry and NCEA qualifications. It is all about students investigating and developing their skills while still at school and to make learning relevant to ensure a smooth transition from school to further tertiary training and work. Students wishing to participate have to commit to:  Going to work for 10 days or 80 hours , Completing Industry based Unit Standards and catching up on missed school work.

*These programmes listed below are offered through the Careers Department.

Work:

The Gateway Co-coordinator and Future Pathways Manager liaise with employers within the local community to find suitable workplaces that match the students’ interests. A working timetable is negotiated that suits all parties. This is usually during school hours but can in some cases also be during school holidays.

Study:

A learning plan that fits in with the industry is designed. Students need to be self-motivated and study in their own time, outside of school hours. The unit standards are, where possible, selected at the student’s year level. Gained credits count towards the students’ overall NCEA record of learning.

School curriculum:

Students need to put strategies in place to catch up on missed school work while in the work place.

Industries:

Some of the more popular industries our students have selected are: hospitality, retail, fashion design, hairdressing, electrical and building. However there are many more industries that can be chosen.

Vocational Pathways

The new Vocational Pathways programme for Year 12 and 13 students in 2016 will provide new ways to achieve NCEA Level 2 – the foundation for success in further education and the world of work. The pathways help students see how their learning and achievement is valued in the ‘real world’ by aligning the NCEA Level 2 Assessment Standards including specific ‘sector-related’ standards with six industries:

· Primary Industries

· Services Industries

· Social & Community Services

· Manufacturing & Technology

· Construction & Infrastructure

· Creative Industries

These six pathways represent ways to structure and achieve NCEA Level 2 by providing a more coherent framework for foundational vocational education; students can develop their own individual education plans, are better informed and able to make better choices to meet their goals. There is the option of trialling work experience during the year.

Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource (STAR)

This Government funded programme is aimed at assisting senior students find a suitable pathway into work or further study. STAR courses are commonly known as "taster" courses for an industry a student may find appealing as a career option. They are a fun and practical way of having a taste of the industry along with the opportunity to gain NZQA unit standards. These are funded by STAR. Some typical courses that are available include animal care, tourism, beauty, and trades. Please contact Mrs Smith in the Careers Department for further information regarding short courses that senior students may attend.
