Partial Strike Notice for High Schools

Cheree Henderson, Administration —

Next week, a partial strike is scheduled to affect high school students. The strike, organized by PPTA Te Wehengarua (the New Zealand Post-Primary Teachers Association Incorporated), will affect different year levels on different days.

What does "partial strike" mean?

A partial strike means that teachers who are members of the union will not be performing "specified work" for the duration of the strike. The notice defines specified work as "any work teaching, instructing or supervising students" in the affected year levels. The strike notice clarifies that specified work does not include certain administrative tasks. This means that teachers will still be able to perform work that is "purely administrative in nature," such as marking assessments, or work that is limited to planning future lessons. The strike will be continuous throughout the strike period, and covered employees will continue to perform some work for their employer.

Strike Schedule

The following Year levels will be "rostered home on these days":

  • Monday, 15 September: The strike will affect students in Years 12 and 13.

  • Tuesday, 16 September: The strike will affect students in Year 11.

  • Wednesday, 17 September: The strike will affect students in Year 10.

  • Thursday, 18 September: The strike will affect students in Year 9.

The strike action is set to begin at 9 a.m. and end at 3:15 p.m. each day. The full school will be as usual on Friday, 19 September. If there are any changes to this schedule, we will let you know as soon as possible.

Who is affected?

The strike will affect teachers who are members of PPTA Te Wehengarua and who are covered by the bargaining for the STCA that was initiated on May 7, 2025. The strike will take place at the covered schools and at any location where the covered employees work on behalf of their employer. The notice was provided on September 12, 2025.
