Sticks ’n’ Stones Group

Fern Stoddart and Melissa Bonilla-Casanas —

Last term the Sticks ’n’ Stones group had the opportunity to go to St Hilda’s to improve skills and learn new ways to reduce bullying in our school.

Sticks’n’Stones originated in Dunstan High School after online bullying became a problem at their school, and students travelled down to help share ideas which were successful in their school.

St Hilda’s, Bayfield High School and Otago Girls’ were the only schools to attend this training day showing our forward thinking as a school. As Otago Girls’ is the only school in Dunedin to already have a Sticks ‘n’ Stones group we were more organised than the rest with seven Year 13 students attending. We gained access to new resources and ideas that we can teach students on how to respond to bullying which we are hoping to implement into iTimes and in Peer Support activities.

A huge thank you to Ms Taigel and Karla for organising and running a very successful event.

Friday 17  May is national Pink Shirt Day. We will be joining the movement to stop bullying and spread kindness and aroha by holding a mufti day and by wearing pink clothing and accessories.

Please help to spread the word and join us in wearing a pink shirt on Friday 17 May.
