Spanish Camp

Ambryme Guerguoa —

I was one of the six OGHS students who participated in the two day Spanish immersion at camp Tirohanga.

The camp comprised of multiple schools, including St Hilda's, Columba, John McGlashan, James Hargest and Kings. I really enjoyed my time there as we got to improve our Spanish and meet new people. We accomplished lots of conversational activities which served to boost our confidence when talking to kids that we didn’t know. I realised that there was no point being nervous because all of us were learning Spanish and everyone was making mistakes. It was a also a good opportunity to make progress on our Spanish internal.

Teachers and Spanish speakers from different places in New Zealand came around especially to introduce us to the Spanish culture with games and activities. There was even a talent show and our group sang Estrellita, the spanish version of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (we won which was a proud moment). We got to partake in two workshops, making our own tortillas and going on a scavenger hunt which was lots of fun. We enjoyed the traditional Spanish food immensely. Ultimately, my favorite part of the camp was the tomatina, a festival held in Spain. The tomatina is basically a tomato fight and throwing tomatoes at people was extremely entertaining, with all of us getting covered in tomato sauce by the end.
