A Glimpse into Our Sporting Excellence
Recently, a staff member uncovered a remarkable piece of our school’s story: a photograph from the March 1924 Otago Athletics Championships.
The image captures a moment of pure determination in the "Ladies' 100-yard race." The runner in the lead was our very own OGHS sprint champion, Miss Lawson (#333). On that day, she became the Otago Senior Women’s sprint champion, crossing the finish line in 13.2 seconds.
Seeing Miss Lawson in full flight—competing in the heavy athletic attire of the era—is a humbling reminder of the trailblazing young women who came before us. She paved the way with grit and grace, proving that the spirit of competition has always run deep in our hallways.
As we head into our own Sports Day this Friday, we walk (and run!) in the footsteps of champions like Miss Lawson. We are honoured to share this small but powerful piece of our legacy with you all.
