Mr S. Pickard, Technology and Design and Mrs R. Flanagan, Design Textiles —

The Otago Polytechnic Celebrate Design Awards were held on 18 August. Congratulations to the following students.

Highly Commended for Fashion Design - Jacinta Boock, Crystal Zhang and Veronica Wallace. 

Overall winner for Architectural Design - Ariana Knudson-Hollebon

Highly Commended - Holly Mason

Here is some more information regarding the garments (See the photo attached):

Left hand dress - Veronica Wallace - Recycled article - Starting life as a 60's dress Veronica updated the style by adding a holter neck and making it into a two piece garment. She then used digital printing and machine embroidery to embellish and individualise with hand drawn leaves.

Centre - Crystal Zhang - The design is based on a traditional Chinese costume - Hanfu. Handsewn and beaded horses patterns on the long dress show the theme of her design is war, as horses were the mounts used during the war in old times. She wants to show women's power through her design.

Right - Jacinta Boock -Two piece grey satin with tule over skirt. Coco Chanel, Marilyn Munro and Chanel No.5 perfume bottle were the inspiration for this garment. She incorporated LED lights into the design as an experiment and to add sparkle to this classic design.
