Personal Bests and Podium Finishes
On Friday 31/3/23 a very talented group of Otago Girls' athletes travelled to Invercargill to compete in the South Island Secondary Schools' Athletics Competition. The team included Anabelle Batchelor, Emelia Adamson, Jessie McGrouther, Lisa Lokman, Nadia Koni, Sienna Nicholson and Caitlin Butson. All of the athletes were placed in the top 8 in their preferred events. Several of the team members also achieved personal bests over the weekend.
Anabelle Batchelor achieved an outstanding double of winning both the U/16 100 and 200m (PB).
Emelia Adamson won the U/15 High Jump, was placed 3rd in the U/15 Long Jump and 5th in the U/15 100m.
Lisa Lokman was 2nd in the U/16 High Jump, 6th in the U/16 Long Jump and 4th in the U/16 400m, while Caitlin Butson finished 3rd in the U/19 400m and 7th in the U/19 Discus.
Jessie McGrouther and Nadi Koni both achieved personal bests over the weekend. Jessie was placed 4th with a PB in the U/16 Hammer Throw, 6th in the U/16 Shot Put and 9th in the U/16 Discus.
Nadia placed 6th in the U/16 Hammer Throw (PB), 7th in the U/16 Shot Put (PB) and 8th in the U/16 Discus.
Sienna Nicholson competed very admirably in the U/15 100m and was 6th in the heat and 5th in the U/15 200m heat.
An exciting highlight was the U/16 4 x 100m relay team beating Rangi Ruru from Christchurch to take out the South Island title. This team consisted of Sienna Nicholson, Anabelle Batchelor, Lisa Lokman and Emelia Adamson, with Jessie McGrouther reserve.
Another highlight of the trip was a visit to K-Mart, where Mr Curtis replenished his stationery supplies ready for Term Two!
Special thanks to Kylie O'Brien, Terry Curtis and Sue Porter who accompanied the team to Invercargill.
Mrs Vicki Millar (OGHS Athletics Team Manager) will no doubt be proudly keeping track of the results on the OGHS Facebook page, as she was unable to attend this event due to being overseas on her Highgate Scholarship Sabbatical.
