South Island Rugby 7’s Tournament

Tash Iti 11Ch —

On Tuesday 28 March the OGHS Sevens team set off to Timaru for a two day South Island Tournament. The girls section included schools from all areas of the South Island, from Motueka down to Southland.

This was the first time we had attended this tournament so our goal was to enjoy our rugby, play our best and improve with each game. It was fair to say our tackling, passing, running and working as a team improved a lot over the two days and our confidence increased a significant amount.

It was a challenging two days, we had tough competition and all of us pushed our bodies to the next level. We won three of our six games finishing 6th. We are all proud of the commitment we made in every game and how competitive we were against all teams, even our losses against Christchurch Girls (placed 2nd) and Motueka (National Champs).

We had big wins against  Waitaki Girls' and Roncalli College and a nail biter against St Margret College (27-28). We are all incredibly grateful we got this opportunity to attend this tournament and look forward to building on what we have achieved at next year’s tournament. It was also great to have exposure to NZ selectors who were there watching and identifying future Black Ferns.

A huge thank you to Miss Ward (Coach), Mrs Millar (Manager), and Trey McLean (Team Referee) and the rest of the team. Without you all, this would not have been able to happen. I am super proud of the girls! We are all fizzing and looking forward to playing in our local school competition next term.
