The Inter School Haka Competition 2018

Matua Mac Te Ngahue —

The bar was lifted in the OGHS haka competition this year.

Allan house opened, shaped in a Giant A and sang the end of The Chambered Nautilus. They continued starting the haka crouched but launched into a thunderous version of Tēnei Te Ruru. Cruickshank, last years winners were always going to be hard to beat and they surprised everyone with strong words and actions of Tēnei Te Ruru and moving into a completely new haka 'Waiturturu' which was written by Whaea Jo and turned into a haka by Sacha Dobson a past student who has the Diligence award for Kapa Haka named after her. Benjamin House followed up with a great take on the haka. Maia Durning started with a karanga and their teachers simulated rowing two waka from the middle of the students, the students then came together and started their haka. At the end the group split into two and left Storm Maole standing the middle. She started a Pacifica performance along with Benjamin which had the whole school erupting in laughter, Storm being the ultimate performer/comedian. Williams were next and they were very strong. Their point of difference were changing the actions with little hops that were very effective. Rinaria Hepi was mentioned by judges as being an extremely strong leader. In the end there can only be one winner and taking out the 2018 OGHS Inter School Haka Competition by .5 of a point this year was the mighty Benjamin House.
