McKellar Camp

Darcy Tavendale —

A week on the Mckellar Camp was an awesome experience. After a relaxing ride up and a stop in Gore, we made it to the Manapouri Campground, with an early wake up on the next day to hop on the Milford Sound cruise. The views were beautiful, with sights of seals and massive waterfalls. As we eventually started the incline up the Routeburn track, the views were gorgeous. Reaching the key summit was just as cool, if not cooler. After making it to the campsite, we set up our tents without knowing the little sleep we were about to get from the relentless wind and rain. The next morning in the pouring rain we packed everything up as quickly as possible and walked to the Mckellar hut, which felt like the longest walk that was never going to end. It was very nice relaxing and drying ourselves and our gear at the hut. The following morning we waited for the rain to ease before our final push to right back to the beginning. I think everyone was very happy when we made it to the vans!! The rest of the night we chilled at the Camp Ground before heading home the next day. Overall the Mckellar Camp was an awesome experience. The views were breathtaking and it was a school camp to remember.
