Outward Bound - July holidays 2021

Meg Sayers and Well Chomchoei —

Over the chilly month of July we spent three weeks in Anakiwa (near Picton) at Outward Bound. The course was an experience neither of us will ever forget. We met many awesome people from around New Zealand, ate lots of good food and had adventures throughout the stunning Queen Charlotte Sounds. Both of us were lucky enough to spend several days at sea on a ‘cutter’, a highlight for sure. We sailed, and rowed, up the Queen Charlotte Sound towards Ship Cove, and got to sleep onboard. Other memorable moments were our tramps. Rather than following a track our ‘watch’ groups were given a compass, map and destination. We then had to navigate through the bush, bashing down trees to create a pathway. While we were in Anakiwa, a ‘1 in 100’ year flood occurred. This meant all students from Outward Bound had to stay at base camp for several days and help sandbag, dig trenches and shovel mud. We also spent time helping locals in the community clean up the damage caused by the floods. Our 21-day course ended with a half-marathon. The half-marathon was challenging for sure, but Outward Bound had already taught us that “there is more in you”. Outward Bound is an experience that widens your perspective, teaches you about yourself, and opens a whole new community of support and friends.

We both highly recommend Outward Bound to anyone who gets the special opportunity to attend. It may seem daunting to some, but on Day 21 you will not want to leave. Step out of your comfort zone and enter your challenge zone, it will be without regret.

Thank you to the Otago Community Trust, the school and the PTSA for giving us this opportunity.
