13PE Cross Country Ski Trip

Morgan Passey & Penny Temple —

Last week, Year 13 Physical Education and some 13 Outdoor Education students travelled to the Wanaka Snow Farm and participated in a 5-day cross country ski trip. This was a mentally and physically challenging trip, that teachers ensured students were well-prepared for. This resulted in a very rewarding experience.

While on the trip, we experienced a mix of good and not so good weather, both of which created lifelong memories. We came into this trip not knowing how to cross country ski or what it was going to be like, and it felt so foreign to us on Monday morning. Throughout the week we had lessons with Alana (Snow Farm instructor) and Ms Ward which allowed us to gain the skills and knowledge needed to master the sport.

Highlights from members of the class included; the food, playing mafia and a variety of games in the evenings, building a snowman, getting to know other people better and the downhill skiing.  A personal favourite memory for us both was when as a class we did a little bit of off track skiing down a hill, along with a little snow fight with the teachers and cracking open the odd flat white.

We were also privileged to witness some Olympian and Paralympian athlete's in action while at the Snow Farm. They were inspiring and helped motivate us to keep going and persevere. It was amazing to be able to share the tracks with these talented athletes.

Overall it was a beautiful experience with beautiful scenery and beautiful people throughout the trip. Getting to experience something new was very rewarding, and we are very thankful for the opportunity. A massive thank you to the teachers, Ms Ward, Mrs Matthews and Mrs Boomer and to the staff at the Snow Farm.
