Level 1 Outdoor Education: Leith Saddle Day Tramp

Storm Wykes & Taylor McEwan, Year 11 Outdoor Education —

On Thursday 28 June, Level One Outdoor Education students went on a day tramp along the Leith Saddle and Rustlers Ridge tracks.

This was the second of our four day tramps towards our internal assessment. The first 45 minutes was all uphill. We climbed to 740 m above sea level and there were still pockets of evidence of last week’s snowfall. On the climb to the top we had a break to take in the spectacular views of the greater Dunedin area and Blueskin Bay. The track was challenging in many ways from the steep climb to the summit and the slippery muddy downhill tracks where we kept slipping and sliding, with the occasional person falling over in the mud! There were lots of fauna and flora and we were hoping to catch a glimpse of the wandering wallaby that has been sighted in this area recently.

Everyone had a positive and fun attitude for the duration of the tramp even when it was freezing cold and windy along the ridge, however we all had the correct layers of clothing to keep us safe.

Thank you to Miss Ward, Miss Young, Ms Boomer, Mrs Leunissen and Jan for giving us this opportunity by coming on the day tramp, we all had a great time.
