Parent Teachers Association (PTA )

Ohoka Office —

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is made up of parents and teachers who volunteer their time to support the school and the school community through fundraising and other social activities. We come from all backgrounds, have children of all ages and are joined by several of the wonderful teachers who care for our children.

The funds we raise help to support the school in many areas. In the past we have paid for things like new testing equipment for the pool, the portable speaker you often see used at school events.

And we don't just pay for the added extras. As a decile 10 school, Ōhoka School receives less funding than lower decile schools. This means that a significant portion of what parents might consider 'basic' resources need to be alternatively funded. So, we work closely with teachers and the Board to identify the needs of the school and our children then an agreed amount is donated to the school annually. Any unspent money is returned to the PTA at the end of the financial year for reallocation in future budgets.

For 2023 we have donated $40,000 to the school to fund ongoing pool maintenance, our sports co-ordinator, a new production / dance & drama specialist teacher, a library refresh, a part-time librarian and additional reading resources. We have also contributed $500 towards running a Matariki Breakfast for tamariki in June last year.

How can you help?

We are always looking for school parents to join us in our fundraising efforts. And there are so many ways to get involved - we are currently looking for people to help with a variety of tasks on our major fundraiser this year (Stars 24th August 2024). Whether you are a super organised admin person, a whizz at designing graphics for social media and flyers or are happy to lend a helping hand with anything - we would love to hear from you.

And, of course, if you want to come along to a PTA Committee meeting, you're more than welcome. We meet twice a term on a Monday at 7pm.
