Te Pōkai Korimako - Year 5/6

Jude Edwards —

As we approach the end of the year, life in the classroom remains as busy as ever! The students have been fully engaged, taking part in the Rakahuri Bike Blast, completing assessments, and exploring the wonders of the Animal Kingdom. There’s certainly plenty happening in Korimako!

Rakahuri Bike Blast

It was a really hot day, and many of us struggled with hayfever, but after taking some pills, we all felt much better. Along the way, we had our fair share of tumbles, skids, and scrapes. The course had a few jumps some I didn't quite land and there were some tight corners where I ended up going over the berm. Whoops!

We were excited to win a few spot prizes, and Grace and Indi did an amazing job, earning second place in their category. Harry and I came in seventh. By Fletcher

Superhero Writing

We started by brainstorming ideas for our superhero, including how they would use their powers. We also had to create a villain for our superhero to defeat. It was important to describe our characters well, think carefully about paragraphing, and ensure our story made sense.

My superhero was Pickle Man, and his nemesis was Potato Man. I was really pleased with how my final presentation turned out! By Ollie K

We Belong/Leadership programme

Both programmes are running simultaneously. We are fortunate to have Jan and Karma leading the We Belong group, where students are learning how to regulate themselves through games and exercises. There are four sessions remaining.

Inquiry: Animals in our World

In Korimako, we have been learning all about animals. We explored how animals adapt to their environments, including how they use camouflage to blend in. For example, chameleons change their colour to match their surroundings.

Now, we are investigating how animals communicate with each other. They use their senses to share information, find mates, warn of danger, and work together in their environments.

Next, we will be looking at how humans impact the animal kingdom. By Aubree
