Maths @ Omanu

Maree Pollock —

This year we are using the Oxford Mathematics and Statistics for Aotearoa New Zealand resources for Years 2-6 and Number Agents resource for Years 0-1 in our school to develop students’ numeracy skills and to support the teaching of maths.

Both Number Agents and Oxford resources complement how we teach Maths @ Omanu. They are both aligned to the refreshed NZ Maths Curriculum which gives teachers a scope and sequence of the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum is knowledge-rich and clear about what students need to understand, know and do in each year from Years 0 to 13.

Teachers will know what to teach, when, and how, based on the science of learning, which provides them with effective teaching strategies and practices.

The resources we have chosen to complement our teaching:

  • to develop positive relationships with mathematics

  • are based on a Maths mastery approach and a highly structured approach to teaching and learning

  • use of technology to engage learners and help identify student needs

  • use explicit teaching to model, guide and practice.

Oxford Maths includes a Student Workbook to support learners to practice their skills. These workbooks are just that - a workbook and by no means will learners be working from the beginning to end across the year. Some learners will access these more than others depending on their learning journey.

Omanu Teachers have begun their Professional Development in Maths and will be engaging in this across the year.

We will be looking for opportunities to share this journey with our Omanu Whānau to keep you up-to-date with how your child is learning maths and how you can help at home.
