Omokoroa No.1 School —

Senior Syndicate's Sports Camp

The 2021 Senior Syndicate's Sports Camp experience was nothing short of 'amazing, excellent and memorable'. From croquet and cage soccer to human foosball, kayaking and archery to indoor hockey and volleyball to netball, darts, chess, checkers and many many more! The Omokoroa No.1's strong, determined and resilient team spent five days from 7am breakfast to final lights out at 9:30-10:00pm playing, supporting and cheering. Every member of the team played their hearts out and competed with smiles and positive attitudes to be proud of every day. We all returned with very empty tanks and croaky voices, but as you can see from the following writing examples, it was most definitely worth it! The students, myself and Craig would like to say a huge thank you to all the coaches and parents who without their support and help over the term with practices and training, they enabled us to get ready and take part in this extraordinary event. I would also like to say a huge well done to all 38 students. I was very proud of all of you.

Sports Camp memories from students

I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as I set foot on the field and saw the cluster of children. It was a big mass of colorful uniforms as kids kept running past me. Before I knew it I was playing human foosball, the ball raced past me like a rocket as I tried to stop it but failed. In less than a second the ball came shooting back in my direction, I kicked it as hard as I could through the wall of the opposition's legs and my teammates scored the winning goal. When the game was over I raced to the rippa rugby field. I had to quickly remind myself of the rules while I put my rippa tags on and in a blink of an eye I was on the field with the ball in my hands, I passed the ball out to my teammates and watched them run on and score a try. When the game finished we were all delighted that we won but I didn’t have much time to be happy because I had to get to another sport. I was running from sport to sport as I suddenly saw dark rain clouds creeping across the sky. Luckily I only had a few more sports left to play for that day. I was halfway through a touch rugby game when it started to rain. I finished the game and I was completely soaked but I kept going and finished my last sports.

I was jumping from sport to sport. It was game day and my heart was beating as fast as a cheetah. We were playing Kaikohe for our first game. They had some big guys on their team. It kicked off- here we go! At first our defence was not the best. They were running through us. At half time it was 22-0 to them. In the second half our defence was better. It was try after try, we heard the blow of the whistle. It was full time and the score was 22-29 to them. It was our last game of rugby for sports camp. All I could hear was the crowd cheering. I couldn’t think, they deafened my senses, what a game I thought, the crowd got louder and louder. My legs were covered in mud. It was like a mud pit. I shook the ref's hand and walked to shake the opposition's hands. We played Bethlehem College. The score was 45-5 to us.

Thank you parents for coming to the sports camp.

‘Aim back, then launch it forward’, I thought as I lobbed it just below my target, number 1, that big target right in front of me, easy. I threw another one slightly to the left, And one missed.

Before I knew it, it was my turn.

“Number 2,” Lewy shouted over the crowd roaring for the basketball downstairs. Oh number 2, I threw it slightly below,

“Yeah,” shouted Lewy.

Wait, I got it nice. I threw the next dart and got 3 too, let's go.

Lewy got one more but apart from that we didn’t get any more. I just realised we were playing against people. What did they get? The man said “5-2 to Omokoroa, NEXT!” Then some other schools but they weren’t us, so we sat down and waited.

“Omokoroa, Elim board two!” another organiser said.

“Com’n boys,” Dave said.

Lewy did paper scissors rock to see who started, he won. It went so fast before I knew it it was our last turn it was 1-0 to Elim we both missed it we had lost.

The last game it went as fast as an eagle swooping past, it was 5-1. I didn’t know if we were in the semis or not. We were luckily in.

It was against Te Rapa. We weren’t too good on our first turn. We both missed. The Te Rapa girl got one first try. In the end we won 3-2 and I didnt realise that it was only 3 turns.

We were in the final but were against Elim. It was hard but we won 6-2. We had won it. I couldn’t believe it.

Thank you for bringing us there and supporting us, especially Dave for supporting us in the darts.
