Wild About NZ

Omokoroa No.1 School —

Wild about NZ have been busy last term investigating the water quality of our local streams.

The students first practiced their skills at school, testing pH, temperature, water clarity and looking for aquatic insects. Next they went to the stream beside the school and discovered it had poor water quality as they could only find 1 aquatic insect that lives in unhealthy conditions. The clairity was also very poor and there was little flow in the stream all contributing to an unhealthy environment. Lastly they went to Puketoki reserve where they found many mayflies and Koura that can only live in healthy streams. The water clairity was incredible with visibility of up to 95cm. The students concluded that Puketoki is a very healthy stream but what happens as it travels down to the one next to school? How does it go from healthy to unhealthy in such a short distance. This was the question they were left to think about until we meet again this term.
