Aquatic Survival Skills

On the 16th and 17th of November, the Year 5 and 6 students completed lessons on Aquatic Survival Skills. Two lovely ladies Jo and Jenna taught us about staying safe in pools, oceans, lakes, rivers and streams.

On the 16th of November Jo taught us how to save people. The first step is to point and yell “Are you ok?” If the person does not say they are ok then tell someone to get help. If no one comes, yell at the person, “Catch this!” and throw an object that can float or a rope. Then tell the person to lie on their stomach and/or swim to the edge of the pool.

During the first session, in the pool we learnt about floating and skulling. For floating we used plastic bottles, beachballs, milk bottles and flutter boards. We then skulled the width of the pool when our number was called.

We hope everyone will be able to experience this once in a lifetime opportunity because it was so fun and we are sure everybody learned a lot about being safe around water. It may one day save a life.
