Hands-on visit from Rural Health

Cath GilsonJuly 4, 2024

Our senior careers classes get a taste of what it's like to be in the health industry.

The volunteers came from a range of disciplines and schools, including Nursing, Paramedicine, Medicine, Perioperative Practice, and Dentistry, from AUT, Whitireia, the University of Auckland and the University of Otago.

The activities ran for about 10-15mins, at different 'stations' where a pair or single volunteer showcased a piece of equipment and why/how it is used in their field; this included knee reflexes, blood pressure cuff, dental moulds etc. The students were working in pairs and rotated around each station.

The volunteers also spoke about their relative fields of work, and the tertiary study path required to get there. Students were encouraged to ask questions about the health industry and various fields.

For selected students in year 12 and 13, the opportunity is available to do a variety of courses that lead into the health industry.
