Opihi College Mobile Phone Procedure

AdminMarch 6, 2024

Almost four years ago, we recognised the importance of students not using or having access to their mobile phones while in the classroom. This change was well received and respected by students and families.

This year, the government announced their “Away for the Day” regulation which is to take effect from Monday 29th April (first day of Term 2).

The regulations require that:

Schools must ensure that students do not use or access a personal phone while they are attending school, including during lunch time and breaks. This includes students who are on a school course or visit outside the school grounds.

Therefore we are looking to amend our procedure to now include the fact that students are not allowed to use or access their personal phone from 8:45 – 3:10 which includes breaktimes. For many of our students this will not pose a problem. For the others, we strongly encourage them to leave their mobile phone at home.

If there is an urgent need for communication that cannot wait until the end of the school day, students and parents are encouraged to make contact through the school office or student email.

The mobile phone procedure is on our website and in this newsletter. If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.
