"The Ghost in the Machine"

Lesley Brook and Ted Whitaker —

Ted Whitaker explores the relationship between human and machine.

The title of this exhibition is drawn from Gilbert Ryle's description of René Descartes' mind-body dualism. "The Ghost in the Machine" is also the title of a book by Arthur Koestler (1967) which has inspired works in various art forms.

Ted Whitaker's solo exhibition in Dunedin last year interwove old and new technology to bring to the surface modes of relationships between humans and machine. The exhibition included the video work "A Furniture History", which searches for the ghosts of furniture catalogues of the past.

Together the works in the exhibition considered ideas surrounding media archaeology, retro-culture, and art after the internet. Our relationship with machines is highly relevant in an accelerated device culture. The exhibition invited viewers to reflect on consumer electronics with industrially designed exteriors, as it aligns the promise of time with the inevitable results of decay and obsolescence.
